BS in Telecommunications Management, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, 1987
Focused on getting into Newhouse from high school because wanted to get into the new business called “telecommunications”. Did not realize Newhouse used the term “telecommunications” interchangeably with “Television, Radio and Film”. While at SU, worked at UUTV(pre-cursor to Citrus TV), was on staff at WJPZ-FM when it went on the air and wrote for The Daily Orange. Went to class.
Unusual career path that took him to NYC, five cities in Northeast Ohio, Las Vegas and back to Syracuse a second time. Started in the radio world (was at WFAN when it first went on the air) but took a detour and spent 30 plus years’ of building technology startup companies in the telecom/networking space proving that getting a degree that “Telecommunications Management” was not such a bad idea after all. Vernone Sparkes, Roosevelt “Rick” Wright and Jeff Stonecash were favorite professors.
Fun facts: Almost interviewed Lou Reed for the DO, Mike Tirico let me copy a Bruce Springsteen bootleg concert “cassette” he had. Experienced the agony of our first NCAA championship loss by one point. Live witness to the 1998 Sugar Bowl. Will hate Indiana and Auburn forever.
Joined BAO because it is time to give back to the next generation of alumni.
